SUFFRAGE RENEW FIGHT
NEW YORK, April 2.—The New York state association opposed to woman suffrage met here today to reorganize for the purpose of fighting against the federal suffrage amendment and to oppose efforts of woman suffrage organizations to hold woman voters together for political aggression.
The New York state association opposed to woman suffrage decided to disband after the election last fall and its reasons for reversing this action are set forth as follows in a statement by the officers of the association:
"After the election the women of this association resolved to lay down arms. It was argued: 'Women are now voters. They will all merge in the general electorate and agitation will stop.' We were wrong. Far from merging into the general electorate after securing the ballot in this state, suffrage organizations are being held together solidly for aggression. A suffrage organization in a state which has granted women the ballot can only be for the purpose of coercion. It has been recently admitted in the state senate by Mrs. Laidlaw, acting chairman of the New York state woman's suffrage party, that speakers of that organization were going through the state urging women not to become affiliated with any political party this year. This means a non-partisan body as a dominating factor in elections.
"Our immediate purpose is to organize the antisuffrage vote and get it to the primaries and to elections as a conservative force. Our ultimate purpose is the resubmission of woman suffrage to the entire electorate of men and women in order that women themselves may register their will on this question that most concerns them."
Mrs. Charles S. Fairchild is president of the New York state association opposed to suffrage. The vice-presidents are Miss Eleanor G. Hewitt, Miss Gertrude L. Hoyt, Mrs. George W. Wickersham, Mrs. James Roosevelt, Mrs. William I. Guthrie, Miss Georgine Iselin, Mrs. Elihu Root, Mrs. Francis M. Scott, Mrs. James Wadsworth, Jr., Mrs. Thos. J. Preston, Miss Alice Hull Chittenden, Mrs. Fritz Achelis, Mrs. Harold de R. Bassford, Mrs. K. B. Lapham, Mrs. Francis S. Bangs, Mrs. John A. Church, Mrs. Mary C. Kilbreth, Mrs. Francis G. Landon, Mrs. Henry Seligman, Mrs. Gustaf Stromberg, Miss Tuckerman, Mrs. Frederick S. Wheeler, Mrs. Henry A. Wise Wood.
