State Laws Permitting Marriages of Children Are a National Crime
By C.L. REDFIELD, Author of "Human Heredity"

Anyone else may observe what I have in getting the material for the book. Look through the "Encyclopedia Britannica" and you won't find a man getting more than a page whose ancestors produced more than three generations in a century. Seven years ago I offered a reward of $1,000 for an example of an eminent man produced by a family of more than three generations in a century, or of a brilliant man whose family had more than four generations. The reward hasn't been claimed yet.

A man of many years, say more than forty, has an accumulation of brain and physical power that he can hand down to his sons. The younger father hasn't this store of ability. A man eighty years old, who has kept busy and active all his life, will have better children than a man of thirty.

Among the savage people it is noticeable that the young men who must go out and capture their wives, who must wait until they are old enough to be crafty and strong, have better children than the youths whose wives are purchased for them.

Some of our states have laws permitting marriages of children.

That's a national crime.

C.L. Redfield argues against state laws permitting child marriages, citing heredity principles where families with more than three generations per century rarely produce eminent individuals; he offered an unclaimed $1,000 reward for counterexamples; older fathers produce better children; among savages, older men have better offspring; deems such laws a national crime.
