AFTER IT.

Some time since one of our citizens left town for the Eastern States. He was an old resident, and his departure was a surprise, as he left his wife and a large business in this place. Many were the surmises as to what took him away, as is the case in little towns where each citizen is supposed to know his neighbor's affairs better than his own.

While perambulating in search of an item yesterday, and intimating that we were in possession of a two-shilling piece with which two of us could obtain a snorter (a bottle of arctic soda), we met a friend who informed us as to the mission of the friend aforesaid. It would appear, from the story imparted, that our friend had gained information that an old prospector on the Comstock, now a resident in Alabama or Georgia, is in possession of a certificate of stock of thirty feet of the original stock of the Consolidated Virginia Mining Co., and little knows the value of that insignificant piece of paper. Our townsman is after that slip. He carried with him a roll of gold notes and certificates of deposit in the Bank of California to a large amount, with which to seduce our old Comstocker, in the hope of getting him to part with the coveted prize for a trifle of its value. A few days ago the stock of the Virginia Consolidated Mining Company was selling readily at the rate of $90,000 a foot, and the interest of which our Silver City friend is in search at that rate would realize him the handsome little sum of $2,700,000.

We hope he will be able to secure the coveted prize, and return at an early day to the bosom of his family and the society of his friends and well-wishers.
