The Rhode Island Republican

The Governour of this Commonwealth has secured the highest respect of our good citizens by his late excellent Speech. He has already exhibited a full compliance with a most conciliating system of Government. He might say he had spared his own enemies and the enemies of the Commonwealth. And he might have expected as a due reward, the confidence of all our citizens. But the opposition have now declared that they intend no terms with the government of their country. They have denounced the Governour, and all in the administration. They have committed outrage upon the feelings of all our citizens, and defied our laws. The Governour appears now not barely with the ensigns of justice, but with the spirit of it. He gives his character and his honour to support the dignity of our laws. A new aera begins. We are no longer to hesitate. Our Government is to lead us to glory, and our only duty is to follow.
