San Francisco, Oct. 1.—James Lick died at his apartments at the Lick House this morning. To-day his body is lying in state at the Pioneers' Hall.
San Francisco, Oct. 2.—The entrance to the Lick House are draped with crape, and the rooms of the deceased are similarly bedecked. All preparations were made yesterday for the funeral. The funeral of ceremonies of the late Mr. Lick. Early in the afternoon the Board of Directors of the California Pioneers convened and read a note from the Secretary of the Lick Trust Company informing them that the Trustees had delegated to the Pioneers the honor of taking charge of the obsequies. The charge was unanimously and thankfully accepted. A guard of honor was at once detailed to proceed to the Lick House, receive the remains and with all respect escort them to the society's hall. As soon as the details could be arranged the escort met at the Lick House parlor where the body was delivered to them by the trustees of the fund, who had been guarding them. The remains were then placed in the hearse and with six members of the delegation on either side, the cortege moved slowly along Montgomery street to the hall. On its arrival at the hall door, the Pioneers were met by the board of directors and all the members present in the building, when with slow steps, between lines of uncovered heads, the casket was carried by the escort into the assembly hall and placed on a bier appropriately bedecked, there to rest until the last honors are paid to the deceased. A general invitation was given to the Academy of Sciences, Mechanics' Institute, Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, Society of Territorial Pioneers, Governor and city officers, judges of Federal, Supreme and District Courts, County, Probate and Criminal County Judges, Justices of the Peace, Trustees and ex-trustees of James Lick, and all societies and organizations civil and military, and all citizens who desire to testify their respects for the deceased on the day of funeral. The remains will be placed in the vault of the new cemetery of the Masons, if consent can be obtained therefor, until arrangements shall have been completed for the final burial. Mr. Murphy, Mayor of San Jose, yesterday called upon the trustees and stated that Mr. Lick had expressed to him a desire to be interred on Mount Hamilton on the site of the observatory to be erected by the trustees of the fund; and it is probable that that will be the final disposition of the remains. It seems to be the general impression among the trustees and those interested in the Lick estate, that Mr. John Lick will come to this city at once. Telegrams were sent to him yesterday morning by Mr. Schoenwald and others, informing him of the death of his father, and from an answer received, he is expected to be in this city by the first of next week. The date of the funeral has been changed from Tuesday to Wednesday next.
