Full Text

The Fall of the late Minister, Monsieur Chauvelin, is the common Topick, in which the Cardinal has perform'd the Part of a real Statesman. His Crimes are very flagrant, they say, but common enough to some Great Men, for which Reason his Punishment is made easy, being only exil'd to his own fine Palace, and to contemplate there in his curious pleasant Garden. He is accused of being the principal Author of this War, which his Ambition and Avarice first kindled, and has ever since been kept alive by his Intrigues and close Correspondence with the late Don Joseph Patinho, and afterwards with the Queen, by whom he has been well paid for his Work and Time. They lay to his Charge also some Matter of Peculation, but this being Part of his Ministerial Character, it falls with his Employ. This Gentleman was in the open Exercise of his Offices the 19th at Night, dispatch'd several of his Affairs, and gave Audience to several Foreign Ministers; but very early the next Morning, when he was going on Business, he was struck dumb with the King's Order to go immediately to his magnificent Seat of Grosbois, and read the Adventures of Rabelais, but to deliver up the Seals and all his Employments. He was accordingly conducted there with an Officer and 4 Musketeers, and all his Offices at Paris, Versailles, and elsewhere, were seal'd up.
