Cruelty to Horses.
We notice in an editorial of the Charleston Mercury, of the 31st, this subject mentioned—it is needless that we enlarge upon the matter, for it is the bounden duty of every good citizen to suppress this evil, no matter where it may be found, for a man who will abuse an inferior creature, a poor dumb animal, particularly the noblest of all, a Horse, "is fit for treason, stratagem and strife."
Cruelty to Horses.—We were witness yesterday to what we are glad to say is by no means common in this community—the maltreatment of a horse by a white driver of a cart. In endeavoring to force the animal to a backward movement for a considerable distance, the ordinary whip was laid aside, and a stick mercilessly applied to the head and neck of the poor horse by his unfeeling manager. There is a law of the State against the cruel treatment of animals, and any indulgence in a practice so repugnant to the feelings of humanity should be punished by an enforcement of the statute.
