Full Text
We have heard of nothing terrible having transpired in South Carolina, since the important first of February. Two merchant vessels have been stopped at castle Pinckney, and the duties on their cargoes secured, before permitted to land at Charleston: but these were circumstances attended with no noise, and, of course, they produced no excitement. Two or three regiments of South Carolina Militia, armed with umbrellas and cornstalks, were paraded in the streets of Charleston, a few weeks since, much to the edification of the Nullifiers, but they left no other traces of their military achievements, than what were perceivable in the demolition of sundry good lots of gingerbread, and the emptying of some scores of savory tureens, smoking with turtle soup. Nullification will soon blow itself out. It is a tornado, much more tremendous in its noise than in its effects. It will soon become as calm and mild as the "sweet South, breathing on a bank of violets; stealing and giving odour."
