Greek Ordination
Held In Pomfret
Rev. A. G. Giannoukous Is First Priest To Take Final Vows At Pomfret Theological School.
Rev. Ambrosius G. Giannoukos, professor of music at the Greek Theological Seminary in Pomfret, took his final vows in the priesthood of the Greek Orthodox Church Monday, marking the first time since the establishment of the seminary in Pomfret that this ceremony has taken place at the school.
The Rt. Rev. Athenagoras of Boston, Mass., bishop of the New England area, officiated at the ceremony which took place in the school chapel and several priests from various cities of the New England diocese participated in the colorful and impressive ritual.
A choir of nearly 100 voices, comprised of students of the seminary, chanted the ancient Byzantine ordination hymns and the Rt. Rev. Athenagoras conducted the pontifical liturgy that preceded the ordination ceremony. Final vows were administered early in the afternoon.
The ceremony of ordination is one of the most elaborate and impressive ceremonies in the Greek Church. Prior to Monday, these ordination ceremonies have been held in the various churches of the New England diocese.
