Full Text

STABBING.—John Manly, a free negro, was brought before the Mayor yesterday, charged with stabbing another negro named Henry Matthews, the property of Mr. Y. S. Rust, on Tuesday evening, between 9 and 10 o'clock. It appeared from the testimony that both negroes were in Norman Page's grocery, on west 17th street, and that Matthews called Manly a rascal, because he had not returned some money he had borrowed from him (Matthews.) Manly made some indignant reply, and both went into the street, where Matthews made a pass at Manly, but did not hit him. Manly then drew a case knife and stabbed Matthews in the left shoulder, cutting into the flesh about two inches.

The Mayor on yesterday sentenced Manly to receive thirty-nine lashes.
