"I admire the firm spirit and sincere style of the new administration: The contrast of this with the unspeakable debasement of the house, illustrates the qualities of the President and his ministers at the expense of our country's honor and safety. For I cannot but expect Europe will despise us as much as the French do. I am certain Mr. Pickering is exceedingly popular and very deservedly. His answers to Adet and to the little Spaniard, discover an ability that is not denied by any body. The vigor of his style and manner produce an effect highly pleasing, which even ordinary readers perceive and are delighted with. Mr. Wolcott too is highly esteemed and is indeed a man of sterling worth and good sense. Of Mr. M'Henry, I know little, but think well of him. The public therefore is well disposed towards our executive government, and will if need be support it. The jacobins know the crisis will overthrow them or the government, and it is with that foresight they stir in Roxbury and Milton. I heard a neighbor shrewdly say of general Heath's speech in Roxbury town-meeting, that he spoke his book, and described the terrors of war in a manner that no man could who had not felt them. Is nothing to be hoped from the house? Will not the common danger draw a few to unite with the government, or do they resolve to sever the ties of our union? Vigor and energy, if the government could display them, would bring down jacobin opposition to the dust, and gain a new stability for our future peace and order."
"This moment I hear a report which I will not and indeed do not believe, that a duel has taken place between Giles and Otis, the latter killed on the spot—God forbid."
