Miss Minnie H. Vorhis, of Spencer, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, was awarded the Hall essay prize and yesterday read her reputed production as her graduating essay at Elmira college: It was exceedingly good, and won the most hearty commendations on every hand. To-day it was discovered that the article was taken almost bodily from a paper written in 1880 by Charles Dudley Warner, and printed in Scribner's of August, that year, under the title of "Western Man." Miss Vorhis changed the title to "The Future of the Western Man," but in the original every point made by her can be found word for word. The committee composed of Rev. Mr. O. A. Houghton, C. A. Collin and Henry Redfield, awarded the prize to Miss Vorhis, but two classmates of Miss Vorhis to-day found the magazine containing Mr. Warner's article on the table in the editorial room of the college paper.
