pains have obtained as much happiness as falls to the lot of humanity. by pursuing what was right ;" which S, being interpreted, weak and insignificant: we are now inclined to style Mr A. had he pursued what is right in our eyes, had he advocated with us the sacred right of insurrection, laboured to overturn our civil constitution, levelled a deadly blow at Christianity by endeavouring to effect the election of. a man to the Presidency who ridicules and despises it ; had he exercised his pen in vilifying Gen. Washington, Mr. Adams, C I. Pickering. Gen. Hamilton and other conspicuous characters who are the boast and glory of our, country.- " He might with all the pains" or talents, have been one of the leaders of our gang ; and by the homage and rewards, which we, and our instigators the. French, should have rendered him, he would " have obtained as much happiness as falls to the lot of hu- manity to enjoy in such a society. Duane con- cludes with this consoling reflection, that Mr. A. is " mortified" by his strictures.-- Far from it : Mr. A. conscious this cha- racter is invulnerable, receives such calumny with the contempt it deserves, and defies the ut- most fury. which the malignity of party- spirit, the frenzy of Jacobinism, or the col- lusive insolence of infidelity can display, to depricate him in the estimation of the vir- tuous, and the good ; of true Federalists, and of sincere Christians.
