Mr. Durden of Dougherty
Mr. Adie Durden, a member of the Legislature from Dougherty County, says that Fred Hand and Joe Boone should resign as Speaker and Clerk of the House.
Mr. Durden had some local bills and they have been thrown out of the window by the Supreme Court. These bills extended the limits of the city of Albany and took in a lot of the Negro population. Mr. Durden has registered them all up and has an election for Mayor coming up in a few days.
When the Supreme Court voided Mr. Durden's bills they messed him up. Mr. Durden has been a member of the Legislature for about 15 years, he was on the commission that wrote the new constitution and when he carried his bill down to get the Acting Governor to sign it he should have looked at it to see if the Clerk of the House and Secretary of Senate had it in proper shape.
Members of the Legislature usually check up on their local bills before the Governor signs them. Mr. Durden, with his experience, should have kept the Legislature from making any mistakes.
But Mr. Durden is sore with Speaker Hand. He wanted to be Mr. Hand's floor leader. He was slated to be floor leader. He was supporting the White Primary Bill and helping draw it and when Eugene Talmadge died he got against the White Primary Bill so Mr. Hand didn't appoint Mr. Durden floor leader.
Durden is in a bad fix.
He did it himself!
