GOOD BYE, NICK!
The following paragraph from the New York Commercial is amusing:
"Washington Globe was horribly frightened for three days, and not knowing what to do, has resumed the old tirade of the bank and Biddle, of which the whole United States are now perfectly sick. The people, generally speaking, feel no interest in the United States Bank: but we do want a national institution of much larger capital; and from the commanding position of New York--the great proportion of the public revenue collected through our city, we think we are justified in expecting that the mother bank should be conceded to us. The United States Bank has taken refuge in Pennsylvania--there let her remain and fulfil her contracts with that State, to the letter and in the spirit with which they were made; but let us have a bank capable of keeping her, and every bank throughout the United States, in subjection, and of obliging them to confine their issues within the bounds of prudence--one that will be able to regulate the currency, and furnish us with a sound and uniform circulating medium."
Heartily sick of Biddle and the bank--the people feel no interest in the United States Bank--it has taken refuge in Penn. sylvania--there let it remain--let her fulfil her contracts with that State--and let us have a national bank that will rule her and all the rest! Farewell Nick. When the prince of whigs, the Secretary of the Hartford Convention, wishes to place you and your "rallying point" under the control of a new bank, you may rest assured "your cake is dough."
We have, for months, suspected this ungrateful design. After milking the mammoth until they brought on "the blind staggers, the three great leaders of the opposition will abandon her to her fate.
