Forgery. A somewhat novel case of crime for this vicinity, has just been brought to light.

Mr. George B. Trowbridge, of Bethel, was on Monday, arraigned before Samuel W. Jennings, Justice, on a charge of Forgery. The charge was clearly sustained, we understand—no denial being attempted by the counsel for the accused.

The question of a moderate bail, with the anticipation of its forfeiture, was freely discussed on the examination, and the bail was fixed at $100. The accused party, as was expected, has left for parts unknown. The amount of forgeries, for it appears to have been a succession of forged endorsements upon bank paper, we are unable to state, but rumor carries it over $2000.

In explanation of the lenient, and, as it may be regarded, too sympathizing action of the court, it is proper to state, that there was no knowledge at the time of any further extent of the forgery than the sum of $400, and it was the impression that security had been obtained for this, which induced the Justice to impose bail so comparatively light. Some explanation seems to be necessary, in order to keep our reputation good for administering equity on the generally acknowledged principle that Justice is blind, and bears aloft the scales as his official emblem.

Mr. Trowbridge has hitherto borne an irreproachable character. His standing and prospects were all that could be needed as a stimulant to honorable enterprise. The event is one of those inexplicable ones which but occasionally startle a community, and whose moral, from the impressive nature of the circumstances, needs not to be carried out by words.
