Full Text

From the Philadelphia Am. Sentinel.

It must be a source of heartfelt satisfaction to those Democrats who voted for Harrison and Tyler, to find that they were not mistaken in their choice; and that the man upon whom, by a mysterious act of Divine Providence, the duties of Chief Magistrate of the Union have devolved, has carried into practice those republican principles and doctrines which he has always professed. There is no reason to doubt that General Harrison would have been equally faithful, and would have disappointed the expectations of the advocates of a National Bank, a high protective Tariff, and an extravagant Government. Nothing occurred during the brief period that elapsed between his inauguration and death, to shake the faith of his republican friends in the soundness of his principles. From the manner in which certain men were urged upon him by the leading politicians of the party who were mainly instrumental in electing him, it was next to impossible for him to avoid placing them in the cabinet. To them, and not to him, is to be attributed the proscription of every democratic officeholder that could be reached. It is known that he disapproved of it, and there is reason to believe that he would have arrested it, had his life been spared a little longer.

The course of President Tyler, since the commencement of the present session of Congress, has won for him the unqualified approbation of the whole Democratic party, and has removed all those doubts about his political consistency which the support given to him by his old political opponents was naturally calculated to excite. The Democrats, without reference to the next Presidential election, about which a vast majority of them are entirely uncommitted, will give President Tyler's administration, from henceforth, a cordial and zealous support; whilst the Whigs will find themselves thrown into a regularly organized opposition: the natural position of a party that is, and must always continue to be, a minority party.

During the existence of the present Congress, up to the fourth of March next, it will be in their power to annoy and embarrass the National Administration; but after that they will be powerless. Never was there a party that enjoyed a better opportunity, not only of benefiting the community by wise legislation and by assuaging the bitterness of party rancor by abstaining from persecution, in accordance with their professions, but of rendering themselves popular and perpetuating their political power; and never was there a party in the world that so completely and speedily destroyed itself by its own folly, and the incapacity of its leaders. It was a party which, having for its centre the old Federal party, but strongly reinforced by republicans who had become dissatisfied with the existing administration, was dissolved by the first and only victory which it achieved.
