DETECTIVES ARRESTED IN SHOOTING

Discover Pistols, Blackjacks, Badges in Pockets of Malcom Brothers

UNCLE BUD'S SEALS HELD

The existence of a Negro private detective agency in Atlanta was discovered Wednesday with the arrest of Claude, Jack and Rufus Malcom, brothers, all of 81 Hilliard street, in connection with a shooting in a residence at 276 Fain street Wednesday morning.

When the 3 brothers had been relieved of all articles at police headquarters before being led back to the cell block, the station lieutenant found that he was in possession of a badge, blackjack, two .38 pistols, flashlights, and numerous other 'police' tools, all of which had been removed from the three prisoner's pockets.

After posting $100 bonds each, all three were released pending trial before Judge John L. Cone in recorder's court at 4:30 P. M. today.

According to Radio Patrolman Patrick and Newport they answered three calls of disturbances, said to have been created by the three brothers. One of the officers said was near Lyons avenue and Hilliard street, the second was in front of 26 Butler street, the residence of Henry 'Uncle Bud' Fears, well known Butler street character, and the third was at the Fain street address, the residence of Mamie Webb, Fear's daughter.

The trouble all started, so police learned after the smoke had cleared away, over Mamie Webb's refusal to resume her former relationship with Claude Malcom.

Malcom proceeded to beat her and wreck her furniture, the woman said.

The whole fight started at Fears residence when Malcom first came there to ask 'Uncle Bud's' daughter to return with him, it is said. The woman appealed to police for aid as she was enroute home near Lyons avenue and Hilliard street. Malcom again accosted her, the woman told police. It was shortly after this that police were again petitioned for aid.

By the time officers arrived at the second place, the woman had arrived home, where the Malcom brothers, the woman and her father all met up. The fight continued with the result that several windows were smashed, a living room suite was demolished and Claude Malcom today still gets excited when he thinks of when he came to losing his life.

During the course of the scuffle, Uncle Bud grabbed a .38 pistol which was lying on his daughter's dresser and fired three times.

One of the bullets pierced a hole in Malcom's coat lapel and another took a button off his vest.

Both Fears and his daughter were also arrested on disorderly charges along with the three brothers.

All three of the Malcoms and Fears were charged with carrying concealed weapons.
