Boston, Jan. 14.—The steamship Liberty and the British schooner Dorin today sent out calls for assistance, giving their locations as but two miles from one another south of Cape Cod.
The steamer Sarcoxie took the Liberty in tow and the coast guard cutter Tampa was able to get a line aboard the distressed Dorin, according to wireless messages intercepted at the naval radio station here today.
Wireless messages from the Liberty intercepted here said she was making fair progress toward New York with her tow but requested that the Coast Guard cutter Acushnet be sent to her aid.
A later message from the Tampa said that the Sarcoxie was making five knots an hour with her tow against strong head winds.
The Tampa, which had taken the Dorin in tow, said that the Dorin was flying distress signals, had part of her sail blown away and was short of provisions. She reported she would tow the Dorin slowly to Newport.
The Dorin was reported on January 9 to have been in distress with her engines disabled. The British steamer Cragness towed her to a point about 170 miles east of Nantucket, where the tow line broke during a storm. She reported, however, that she had provisioned the distressed schooner before the tow line broke.
The Dorin was reported to have been bound from St. Pierre to Penarth, but was later said to be bound from Halifax to New York.
The location of the distressed vessels was given approximately latitude 39.25 and longitude 66.17.
