Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Durham, June 5.

This morning we had the most terrible Tempest, within a Quarter of a Mile of this City, ever known in these Parts. What is very remarkable; the Effects of it were confined to one Wood : It has levelled most of the Trees to the Ground, stripped many of the Oaks, and totally destroyed one of the pleasantest Foot Walks in this neighbourhood. What is very unaccountable, it came in a Current of Air from the neighbouring Hills, and vented its Fury on this Wood, which is supposed to be the first Place where it met with any Resistance ; it then spent itself upon the River which was observed by many Spectators to be violently agitated. Some think it to be an Eruption of foul Air, a long Time confined, and opened by the late Commotions of the Earth. It is hoped some of your learned Readers will endeavour to account for it.

Event Details

A terrible tempest occurred within a quarter of a mile of Durham, confined to one wood where it levelled trees, stripped oaks, and destroyed a foot walk. It came from neighbouring hills, vented fury on the wood as the first resistance, then spent itself on the river, observed by spectators. Some attribute it to an eruption of foul air confined long and opened by recent earth commotions.
