DIVORCES.
By the printed acts of the last General Assembly of Virginia, it appears that five divorces were granted. Of the propriety of each of these, we have no means of judging, and therefore we infer that those who had the means of forming an opinion on evidence, decided correctly. But we trust that the practice of granting divorces on insufficient grounds will never obtain in this commonwealth, in which hitherto the law of marriage has been clothed with such dignity and majesty. We do not know a more infallible evidence of corrupt manners and morals in a state, than the facility with which discontented husbands or wives are released from their solemn obligations. Let all whom it concerns guard the institution of marriage in the most careful manner. Corruption here runs through the whole social system, and will, sooner or later, work the ruin of any people.--Watchman of the South.
