Full Text

The Austrian successes have, of course, occasioned many promotions by the Emperor. On the 17th April, the Duke of Tuscany arrived, an exile from his principality at Verona. The kings of Naples and Sardinia, the Pope, the Stadtholder and the Tuscan Archduke, form an extraordinary catalogue of dethroned and fugitive potentates. The ancient aristocracies of Venice, Genoa and Switzerland are at an end. The sceptre of the Mamelukes is broken. Such have been the events of the war, but the tide has probably attained the flood, and the two or three next years will exhibit it returning to its ancient level. The French will gradually be driven within their ancient limits. Rome, Naples, Turin, Florence and the Hague will be repossessed by their ancient masters. The Turks, assisted by the plague, will be too strong for the conquerors of Egypt, and the French, by first extirpating the Mamelukes, and then resigning their position to the Turks, will restore to the successors of Selim the power in Egypt which has long been merely nominal.

Thus vibrates the balance, and though thousands perish at every tumbling of the beam, it will at length subside into its ancient counterpoise; ambition is the wind that shakes it, but as long as there is no essential change in the weights, the equilibrium must be finally restored. Our readers may smile at this prophetical effusion, and indeed, to speculate upon the future is an idle task; but one must sometimes indulge in conjecture, and these conjectures, though distant from certainty, are not unplausible.
