The availability of the University of Miami to citizens of this area is an asset of which constantly increasing numbers of these citizens are taking cognizance.
Founded in 1926, this university has grown from an initial registration of less than 300 students to the present enrollment of more than 10,000.
Figures do not necessarily mean much unless they are translated in terms of usefulness to those who read them. The growth of the university is reflected in the progressiveness of the institution and its willingness to keep abreast of the times in supplying the student with the items in which he is interested. Thus, we find that today the University of Miami consists of a College of Arts and Sciences, a School of Business Administration, a School of Education, a School of Engineering, a School of Law, a School of Music, a Graduate School, and an Evening Division.
The growth of the latter, the Evening Division, has been noteworthy. Started in a small way, the Evening Division now offers more than 300 courses representing all departments of the university.
It is now possible to complete a degree program entirely by attending evening classes. While it is possible for the casual student to take any course to his liking, degree candidates are required to conform with regular entrance requirements and to observe normal prerequisites in their course selections.
Headed by Dean Dan Stein hoff, the Evening Division at the university offers courses in accounting, airline stewardess training, anthropology, architectural engineering, art, botany, business education, business law, business statistics, chemistry, civil engineering, commercial art, drama, economics, education, engineering drawing, English, finance, French, geography, German, government, health and physical education, Hebrew, history, hobby center, home economics, human relations, industrial engineering, industrial training, journalism, library science, management, marketing, mathematics, mechanical engineering, modern language teaching, music, nursing, philosophy, physical education, physics, psychology, radio and television, reading, religion, Russian, sociology, Spanish, speech and zoology.
New courses are constantly being added to meet the needs of adults in this area, and the large and varied offering at the present time makes it possible for students to learn while earning, inasmuch as evening classes can be attended without giving up paying positions held by the students during the daylight hours. All courses offered by the Evening Division carry college credits unless otherwise specified. Hobby Center courses, for instance, are not applicable to degrees.
In case the student is not interested in adding to his college credits, he is issued a certificate denoting that he has successfully completed the course or courses taken. In addition, the Evening Division has instituted a series of certificate programs designed to guide students in special fields of study. Upon the satisfactory completion of one of these programs a certificate is awarded the student. These certificated courses now include accounting, hotel and restaurant management, industrial training for construction workers, interior decoration and secretarial studies.
The offices of the Evening Division are located in the Merrick Building, on the main campus of the University of Miami, in Coral Gables. Information on any or all of the courses can be obtained by visiting the offices, writing or telephoning. If a certain course is not available and enough prospective students desire to have the course instituted, the Evening Division is always willing to co-operate. Many of the courses now offered have been established in this manner. It is the sincere desire of the University of Miami and its Evening Division to serve the public.
Registration for the first semester at the University of Miami starts on Sept. 19 and continues through Sept. 25, with the exception of Sunday, Sept 23. Hours for registration in the day school are from 8:30 a. m to 4 p. m., while Evening Division students also may register during those hours and from 7 p. m. to 9 p. m., excepting on Saturday when the offices close at 12 noon.
