As announced elsewhere, it will soon
be seen that Wheeling is to be favored
with an appearance of this great artist
on Saturday evening, December 14th,
and the programme which has been ar-
ranged for the occasion will largely con-
sist of ballad selections, while a special
feature of the concert will centre in the
appearance of the celebrated lady violinist
Miss Zline Mantey. Well known musical
critic in a recent number of the Musical
Folio writes as follows concerning Miss
Root:
"She soon found many friends among
the celebrated artists of the circle in
which she was received. Madame
Sterling and Madame Marie Roze es-
pecially manifesting great interest in
her, and a desire for her artistic success,
recommending her for concerts and in-
troducing her to the greatest musical
celebrities. She was particularly de-
lighted to meet Jennie Lind (now
Madame Goldschmidt) at an Artist
Soiree, where she also met other cele-
brities, and Miss Root was invited to sing
a song of her own composition, "Wait-
ing for her Sailor Lad," which
she gave to the apparently great
pleasure of her hearers, and she
also sang in a Trio with two of
the leading artists of "Her Majesty's
Opera." From this period Miss Root
made rapid progress in her artistic ca-
reer, and became more and more successful, being a favorite both as a lady
and an artiste.
She commenced her studies with
teachers of high rank, and learned the
most beneficial points of the methods
of the five greatest masters that have
ever lived, taking her finishing lessons of
the Prince Maestro, Signor Garcia (Jen-
ny Lind's master). Miss Root made her
debut in England at the Royal Pavilion,
singing at a grand concert given by the
"Brighton Symphony Society," under
the patronage of His Royal Highness,
"The Duke of Edinburgh," and the
"Earl of Mar.
She achieved a great triumph on this
occasion, was encored repeatedly, and
was again engaged for other concerts,
her sure success securing her a week's
continuous engagement at the "Brighton
Aquarium," where she was recalled
after both of her songs every evening.
Among her most successful engage-
ments in London was one to sing at the
Crystal Palace, June 16, 1878, on the oc-
casion of a grand fete in honor of the
presence of the Sultan of Zanzibar,
when thousands came from all parts of
England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Miss Root was a stranger, and from
America, nevertheless she was warmly
received like an old favorite, and was
enthusiastically applauded and recalled,
especially after singing a Scotch song of
her own composition, "Oh, Dinna ye
Forget," there being many Scotch peo-
ple in the audience."
