FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN.
Captain Bean in the ship Augustus has arrived in Salem, from Smyrna, via Malta, at which port Captain R. stopped in consequence of hearing that war had broken out between the U. S. and Spain: he informs that nothing had transpired at Smyrna or Malta of Mr. Pinkney's negotiations at Naples.—That the French Duke of Rovigo [Marshal Savary*] was on board the Augustus several days at Smyrna, and was anxious to obtain a passage to America, but Captain R. could not accommodate him: It was however expected that he would embark in the brig Only Son, for Philadelphia. Gen Lallemand had embarked for England to secure some property, from whence he intended also coming to this country.
*Savary was formerly Minister of police to Bonaparte; and after his first abdication took great pains to obtain an audience and employment from Louis 18th. He and Lallemand surrendered themselves to the English with Bonaparte; but were refused permission to follow him to St. Helena, and at their request were sent to Malta.
