STOLEN MONEY RETURNED.

Lowell Bank Employes Promised Immunity From Punishment.

Lowell, Mass., Oct. 22.—Although the fact cannot be confirmed from official sources it is believed that money and securities taken from the vault of the Merchant's National bank by Teller A. G. Smith and Bookkeeper L. K. Swift before they disappeared last Thursday night have been returned to the bank, for at 2 a. m., a number of bags, apparently containing money and bundles of documents, believed to be bonds and bank securities, were delivered to the Merchant's National bank by Lawyer Burke of Lowell and Mr. Bartlett of Elden & Bartlett of Boston.

As these lawyers have been understood to represent the absent men and as the statement was made that the men cleaned out the bank vault before they left in order that they might be in a position to compel the officials to promise immunity from punishment for any wrongdoing which might come to light, it is considered probable that the men have reached an understanding with the bank's managers and that the property of the institution was returned as a result.
