U.S. Marshal, Tacoma, Dies After Attack

(By Associated Press)

TACOMA, Aug. 23—An autopsy today was expected to determine the cause of death of U. S. Marshal A. J. Chitty, who died late yesterday after two manacled bank robbers, inmates of McNeil Island penitentiary, attacked him in the Federal building. Death is believed to have been caused by a heart attack.

Chitty was one of the best known officers in the west. Former Spokane lawyer and Washington state newspaper man, he became U. S. Marshal for the Washington division in 1933. He was one of the campaign managers for Senator Homer T. Bone when Bone was first elected.
