Full Text
An Indictment having been preferred against Several houses in Canvas town (commonly called Holy Ground) as forming a public nuisance, the Sheriff attended yesterday to enforce their being demolished. It may be said of this justly celebrated town, that its fate was similar to that of Troy, both fell from that all subduing cause-- A WOMAN; both towns were sacked, plundered and destroyed ---a wooden horse was the instrument through which Troy was leveled-- a wooden staff has laid Canvas town low--even the effect was analogous--- Helen and Cassandra, on beholding the general ruin in which they were involved--beat their white bosoms, tore their golden hair, uttering dreadful imprecations of the profane Gods for so dreadful a mischance--The Canvas-town heroines did the same--they tore their dishevelled hair-- muttered curses horrible to hear against the officers of justice. A heavy rain succeeded the demolition of Venus's temple, which was no doubt exceedingly annoying to such of the frail mourners as could not procure a lodging.
