AUTHENTICITY!

Wanted one authentic Confederate salute!

An unusually simple request it would seem, but it proved difficult enough to delay William Wyler in directing a scene with Garry Cooper for Samuel Goldwyn's "The Westerner," which opens Sunday at the Eastwood Theatre.

The scene, interpolated in the picture showed a group of actors headed by the beautiful Lily Langtry, on a stage of a small Texas theatre enacting a scene from a drama of the Civil War. Wyler, always meticulous, insisted that the salute be correct. Search finally revealed that the Confederate salute was no different from the accepted U. S. Army one, as General Robert E. Lee was a former West Pointer. So shooting continued.
