Names of Towns.

It would seem that the rage for laying off towns had arrived at such a height, that original names cannot be found for them. Not only have we New Philadelphia, New Lexington, New Natchez, &c. but have now two towns of the same name in the same state. There is a town in the eastern part of this state, called Mount Pleasant, which is increasing rapidly, and has a bank. There will, it seems, be one of the same name within 10 miles of Cincinnati, if the proprietors should be so fortunate as to dispose of their lots. Suppose, then, it prospers also, and establishes a bank, (which is not at all improbable, if it can obtain enough inhabitants only for a board of directors) the notes of the two banks, issued apparently in the same town of the same state, will be unavoidably blended and confused; whence serious difficulties may arise to individuals. The notes of one may be deemed good, and those of the other good for nothing. Witness the bank of Lexington, (Ind.) The bank notes of Marietta, (Pa.) which are not current here, are frequently mistaken for those of Marietta, (O.) which are taken in the banks of Cincinnati. Small notes are in circulation on the banks of Washington, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, without distinguishing the state; which is a source of considerable perplexity and loss to individuals who are ignorant of the slight shades of difference in notes of the same name, but on different banks.

serious difficulties may arise to individuals due to confusion in bank notes, leading to perplexity and loss.

Event Details

The rage for laying off new towns has led to duplicate names in the same state, such as two Mount Pleasants in Ohio, one in the east with a bank and another proposed near Cincinnati. This causes confusion with bank notes, similar to issues with Lexington (Ind.), Marietta (Pa.) mistaken for Marietta (O.), and notes from banks in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and Kentucky without state distinctions.
