Full Text

We, in the South, who have not an opportunity of seeing the Black Republican newspapers, and of being cognizant of the doings of the faction, in the present political contest, hardly have an adequate idea of the tremendous exertions that the leaders of that party are making at the North, to accomplish the election of Fremont.

Nothing is left undone. The press, the pulpit, the stump are all put in daily requisition. The country is flooded with tracts, pamphlets, handbills, and caricatures. Meetings are held whenever a gathering of the people can be collected. Orators are paid to go from State to State. The railroad cars and steamboats are supplied with political publications for reading by the passengers.

In short, to accomplish a desperate end, the most determined and desperate means are resorted to, without stint. Never did a party in this country make such efforts, with such untiring energy. They have risked all upon the success of this, the first serious attempt to divide and dissolve the Union, by the action of the people, at a Presidential election.

May all their arts be confounded and brought to nought!
