A Question of Taxes.

The following letter was received by the STANDARD, and as it is on a subject that is not quite clear to a great many workingmen, it was submitted to County Clerk Booth, who furnishes the answer:
To the Editor of the Standard:
As some of us do not understand this special road tax, we would like to have the STANDARD explain how it is, as not long ago it was stated that those living in the city were exempt from paying special road taxes, as it is taken out along with our poll tax by our superintendents—road tax $2; poll tax $3. Is this road tax proper inside of the city, or is there still a poor tax for it? By answering the above you will confer a favor on many of the boys.
MULL MEN.
A road tax is collected from all able bodied men between 21 and 45 years of age. Poll tax is collected from all men between 21 and 60 years of age, except paupers and insane persons. The poll tax is the poor tax. The county collects the road tax from persons liable therefor living outside incorporated cities, and collects the poll tax from all persons living inside and outside of cities. When the county collects through the mining companies road tax from a person living inside the city, the city does not collect street tax from him also, but exchanges a street tax receipt for the county road tax receipt, and then the city collects from the county the amount of the tax. Every man between the ages above named is liable for both taxes. Very often the mining superintendent collects taxes from employees
