SURVEY ON TO DETERMINE..

Will Miami Support A Jr. College For Negroes

The National Teachers' Research Association is now undertaking a survey to find out whether or not a junior college for Negroes is needed in Miami.

Miami, one of the largest cities in Florida, located in the largest county of the state has no college of any kind for Negroes. The nearest institution of college rank is approximately 260 miles away in Daytona Beach, Florida.

While the job of pioneering is a rather difficult one and one which few people are willing to undertake the meteoric rise of University of Miami should be enough inspiration for those who are willing to make the sacrifice. The University of Miami started less than twenty-five years ago and has "mushroomed" itself into the class as one of America's leading institutions boasting around 8,000 students.

With three high schools in the county it appears that there are enough individuals who are not able to go off to college who should be glad to take advantage of any institution that will give them a chance to further their college work while they remain at home. It appears that any such institution at present may have to be privately operated since Miami at this time has no such tax support-institution for Whites.

Every citizen can give his or her support to this type of a worthy project. Your moral support and hearty cooperation will be much encouragement to those who are willing to venture out on this road.

Many tax-supported institutions have their origin in small beginnings. It might be a chance for Miami to ultimately see the need for such an institution and accept the responsibility of supporting it. The response you give to the survey on this matter will determine if such an institution is needed.
