THE FINAL WORD!
WHAT WILL THAT word be? With the curious changes and interchanges now evident in theories, philosophies as well as in map re-shaping, on faces each sunset without the least hint of what is coming next. The world is being reshaped anew and what was is fast passing away. It is highly evident that we have lived the last few years in more world history than any generation before us.
One thing certain about the while, Germany is well prepared for war. In spite of the horror and its attendant grimness the world and the future look on the inevitableness on what preparedness will do. In the years of a supposedly peace, these people were preparing for the greatest blitzkrieg the ages have ever known. Not only were they preparing with machines and implements of death, they had strange teachers all over the world preparing the people for a new philosophy, a new religion and a new system of applied economics. In spite of all that is deserving to be said about Hitler and his beastly cabinet, it will generally be admitted that they have taught the world-if it does seem too late-the lesson of unity in purpose and uniformity in procedure.
With all the deadly carcasses of smoldering nations behind him, with their people fearfully nursing the memories of a long past that will never triumph again, there is not a single serious disruption on the surface to encourage the thought once prevalent-that the conquered nations would so disintegrate and cause so much fury that the whole program of Hitler would itself collapse.
All in all Democracy has met its first great challenge. Democracy has enjoyed through the years an enviable opportunity for the perfection of any philosophy. It has sent forth through the land many able apostles whose preachments have caught fire and moved many nations of the Old World Democracy has had its faults, even Christianity as we have tried to practice it had but it was a wonderful and powerful pulling power for freedom and venture It had the preamble of the Bible and the presentation of the gospel It suffered as many another project, the infestation of demagogues and false teachers with itching ears and hearts of greed They were Democracy's greatest enemies They preached fairness and justice to all men while appealing to caste and prejudice and wanton violation of the organic laws which they themselves help to make and yet feel They are still the enemies within our gates and the scions of the traitors in the Old World who betrayed the people and every trust conferred and sold out their countries for questionable considerations
While these are dark days, wrought with horror and beset with fear on every hand, the tattered flag of Democracy in the Old World hasn't been hauled down
The fires of liberty, like a snuffed candle, still reach toward the skies
Surviving democracies have time to stop at the rubicon and consider They have the enviable opportunity of making democracy work among their own subjects They have the chance to make friends and believers in the firm foundation that has been laid by the fathers of the past.
