The London Courier of the 16th of May has the following as the leading article:
The Morning Chronicle of this day, in one of its leading paragraphs, says: -
"We understand that an order has been issued from the horse guards, for every officer belonging to regiments now in Canada, to join their respective battalions, notwithstanding any previous leave of absence obtained"
"After making inquiries of the proper authorities, we can assure the public, that the above is "totally false and unfounded." There is no intention of issuing any such orders, nor is any necessity for them contemplated by his majesty's government. The relations of this country with the United States never stood on a more friendly footing.
"We have felt it our duty thus particularly to notice the above paragraph, as there are persons on the stock exchange who circulate the most groundless accounts to depress the funds with respect to India and the United States, but particularly with reference to the latter. These persons have, no doubt, imposed on the Morning Chronicle."
