CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa., April 25.—During the next week or so the eyes of chess experts and devotees throughout the world will be turned toward this resort. Here the greatest masters of the game in all parts of America and Europe will engage in a struggle for the world's championship.
Prominent among those gathered in the assembly room of the Hotel Rill er when the congress was formally opened today were C. P. Lawrence, amateur champion of England; Dr. Emanuel Lasker of Berlin, who holds the world's championship; D. Janowsky champion of France; M. Tschigorine, champion of Russia; Carl Schlechter, champion of Austria; Geza Maroczy, champion of Hungary; Jacques Mieses, champion of Saxony, and Robert Teichmann, the famous Anglo-German expert of London.
The American contingent was headed by the redoubtable Pillsbury and included besides the champion of the United States such well known experts at the game as W. J. Barry, Frank J. Marshall, A. B. Hodges and W. E. Napier.
