The army recruiting service reported March 22 at Butte that voluntary enlistments were breaking all records in Montana, but that the numbers joining the regular army are still short of meeting current requirements. Maj. H. C. McKnight, chief of the Montana recruiting service, revealed that in a little more than five months 1,038 men had enlisted in the regular army from the Montana area. Major McKnight reported 144 men had been enlisted during the first three weeks of March, which places the Montana district third among the seven states of the Ninth service command.
The total represented only men entering the army through the 11 recruiting stations in Montana. Many others have re-enlisted at East air base, Great Falls, and at Fort Missoula.
Recent high school graduates, quick to see four years of college education after a three-year enlistment, form the bulk of enlistments in the Montana area.
