Monday Morning last arrived here the Sloop Speedwell, of Rhode Island. She was taken on the 9th of May last off Hispaniola, by the Private Snow Hornet, Capt. Spelling, of this Port, as carrying on a contraband Trade. Copy of a Paper found amongst the Papers in Possession of John Boutin, taken in the Sloop Speedwell, of Rhode Island, in her Passage from Fort Dauphin, in Hispaniola, to Monte Christe. in the same Island, by the Hornet Privateer, Spelling Master. And is as follows. Capt. John Boutin, Newport, March the 7th, 1756. " Our Orders to you are. in Case you should happen to meet with a Man of War, private Man of War likewise, that should put you out of your Way, or carry you into any other English Port but this; to prosecute said Capt. for Five thousand Pounds Sterling, and draw upon us for the Charges of Prosecution, which we shall answer with Honour. EBEN. RICHARDSON THO. RICHARDSON. LEMUEL WYATT. On the 18th of May. four Days after Capt. Spelling seized the aforementioned Sloop, being in Company with the Samuel Privateer, they espied a large French Ship of considerable Force, thought to be a French Frigate, which they were obliged to fight for some Time, when the Samuel struck, and Capt. Spelling having an extraordinary Sailer in Command, he proceeded in Chase of a French Fleet of Merchantmen which he gain'd Intelligence of a few Days before.
