COAST OFFICER BESTS PAIR OF LIQUOR BANDITS

CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 24.—(U.P.) A pitched battle between a motorcycle officer and two asserted liquor racketeers resulted in the death of Roy M. Williams, alias Robert Collins, San Francisco, the serious wounding of his companion, Patrick Grace, Chico, Calif., and injury to Officer D. L. Urquhart, of Culver City, yesterday.

Urquhart was awakened by the two men fighting in an automobile in front of his house. As he took two guns from Grace, Williams opened fire on him, but Urquhart's shot instantly killed Williams, while he escaped injury.

Grace then knocked the officer to the ground, causing a brain concussion, and sped from the scene. Urquhart, from a reclining position, fired three shots at the man, all of which took effect. The automobile came to a stop when it hit a telephone pole.

San Francisco police said the automobile in possession of the pair was used in a gun battle in that city recently, and had been stolen from R. A. Jackson of the Bay City.

Grace had bullet wounds in his shoulder, wrist and hand when taken to the police hospital. He will recover.
