Silver In Congress.

The New York Press, a rabid anti-silver paper, has made a poll of Congress on the silver question and has come to the conclusion that there has been no abatement of the "craze" since the adjournment of the last Congress. There are, as the Press puts it, 236 democrats and 8 alliance men in the lower house of Congress, of whom 162, classed as democrats, are in favor of and will pass a free coinage bill. The Senate is republican but not strong enough to prevent the passage of such a bill in the first instance, but quite strong enough to make certain the defeat of any bill vetoed by the President.

The number of democratic Senators in favor of free coinage, 36; number opposed, 4.

Number of republican Senators in favor of free coinage, 18; number opposed, 30.

Number of democratic Congressmen in favor of free coinage, 162; number opposed, 37.

Number of republican Congressmen in favor of free coinage, 9; number opposed, 70.

Total number of democrats in both houses in favor of free coinage, 198; total number of democrats opposed, 41.

Total number of republicans in favor of free coinage, 27; total number opposed, 100.

Total number of democrats doubtful, 48; total number of republicans doubtful, 9.

A majority of two-thirds is necessary to pass a bill over the President's veto, and as this cannot be gotten in the Senate, of course no such bill can pass. This brings us back to the stand occupied by the Keystone all of the time, which is that a bill will probably pass the House, and may pass the Senate, but will be killed in the White House in accordance with the wishes of the republican leaders throughout the country. So we shall have no silver bill from this Congress.
