ATLANTA.—Brooklyn is by no means the only place in which a tree grows.
(Get it? A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.)
Well, anyway, here are some interesting figures:
During the 1952-53 season 28-million trees were planted in Georgia by six pulp and paper companies located in Georgia and eight located in adjacent states and operating in Georgia.
Three companies engaged in the business of producing pulpwood in Georgia accounted for the planting of an additional 750,000 trees. The total made the largest pulpwood industry planting in the Southern states, according to H. J. Malsberger, of Atlanta, forester and general manager of the Southern Pulpwood Conservation Association.
At the rate of planting 1,000 trees to the acre, the industry is responsible for bringing back into forest production 28,750 additional acres of worthless land in the state, he said.
Of the total 28-million trees purchased during the 1952-53 season 26.5-million were purchased from publicly operated nurseries, while the other 2.5-million were grown in industrial nurseries operated by St. Regis Paper Co. and Union Bag & Paper Corp.
