Washington (FP)-House labor committee hearings opened Feb, 5 with authors of two bills to amend the Wagner act offering the first testimony, Chairman Fred Hartley said Jan, 29.
Representatives Gerald Landis and Clare Hoffman are the lead-off men, to be followed by a series of hearings on what Hartley called various fields in labor problems.
After these, he said, the committee will write a new bill under his name incorporating the committee's ideas.
The new GOP committee head said he hopes to get a strike control bill to the floor by March 15, in time to head off a strike in the coal mines at the expiration of the current contract April 1. He is confident, he said, the committee can write such a bill.
"I am also quite confident," he added, "that this committee will report out a bill that can pass over the President's veto if that is necessary."
