DUBUQUE.

Mrs. Swisshelm and the Godlike.

Our readers will remember the scathing which this queen of Editors gave recently to the king of orators. It was not to be expected that so well directed a thrust at popular vices, could escape the censure of the friends of the Godlike; nor has she indeed escaped. The vilest epithets have been applied to her as a woman, and she has been treated with the coarsest abuse.

And what has she done to deserve all this? Nothing more than to have told the truth. Ah, but she has told it of Daniel Webster. Well, be it so. If Daniel wants to be held above reproach, let him conduct himself virtuously.

We are right glad to perceive that the independent press throughout the country sustains Mrs. Swisshelm in her rebuke of vice in high places and among honorable (?) persons.
