Snazzy Fishing
Trip. Holland Lake
By
Gary Marcum, F.F.A. Reporter
The St. Ignatius F. F. A. went on a fishing trip that lasted five days, July 23 - Aug. 2. All 18 of us started out from St. Ignatius at 5:00 o'clock in the morning. We arrived at Holland Lake at 8:00. We unloaded the five trucks there and packed the pack horses. The way we started out it looked like we wouldn't get there that day. One of Bill Kelly's pack horses bucked off the pack a couple of times. We got to Upper Big Salmon at 5:30 that night. Willy Kelly and Tom Delaney went fishing that night and caught some fish. Chuck Peck caught a 3 and one-half pounder that night. That was the biggest fish caught for awhile.
Kenny Phillips was our cook and Harry Johns helped him out. Ken cooked some pretty good meals even if he had smoke in his eyes all the time. He could cook very good pancakes.
We fished at the Upper end most of the time. When you rode horses out to where the creek came in your horses would sink into mud up to his belly. Chuck Peck, Selmer Detert, and Bill Violet caught the most fish on the whole pack trip.
It was good fishing at the lower end, even better. Bud Mahle and a few other guys caught a bunch of fish with a fly rod in the river. Selmer Detert caught the biggest fish at the other end. He caught it with a "pole".
The day before we were to go out, Selmer Detert saw a bear and Harry Johns saw a cow elk with the horses. Some horse got his rope tangled up with Harry John's horse and rope burned the two hind legs. Bill Violet's horse went lame because the shoe was back to back and it bumped its leg. They had to walk out and lead their horse. They walked all the way except for five miles when they rode double with a couple of us.
It is 23 miles out. Bill lost his camera on the way out but didn't find it. It was a successful trip this year.
