Buildings Abandoned By Army On St. Lawrence

Thirty-six buildings and other miscellaneous equipment and improvements located on St. Lawrence Island have been declared excess and officially abandoned by the U. S. Army, Alaska.

The buildings and equipment are free to the public for the taking.

The buildings and equipment are located on St. Lawrence Island, which is approximately 150 miles southwest of Nome. Since no market exists in that area for such surplus buildings and there is also a lack of adequate equipment to remove the buildings, they have been officially abandoned.

Buildings included in the order are all Quonset huts. Also included are such improvements and equipment as water distribution lines, sewer lines, electrical and fuel distribution lines, cesspool and a covered walkway.

Quonset huts included in the order are numbers: T-7000 through T-7009, T-7011 through T-7014 and T-7017 through T-7038. The huts range in size from 400 square feet to one mess hall of 6,095 square feet.

The buildings are in an area which was obtained for use by the Army under a Special Land Use Permit. (Fairbanks Serial No. 010758). The permit was relinquished by the Army on May 27, 1958 to the Bureau of Land Management. This land is in a reindeer reserve, created by Executive Order dated January 7, 1903, which will not be affected by the relinquishment of the permit by the Army.
