RE-PUBLISHED BY PARTICULAR DESIRE.

FROM THE PROVIDENCE GAZETTE.

To BRUTUS*.

IN a paper printed without the Union, and for that and other reasons very properly called The United States Chronicle, you have published "Considerations on the Order of Cincinnatus," and dared to attack the character of "a Washington."

Think not that I am about to defend it. My pen cannot add to its lustre, nor your efforts cast thereon the shadow of a shade.

Proceed in abusing the meritorious officers of the late American army, and distinguish them, if you please, by every opprobrious epithet that malice, ingratitude or antifederalism can suggest; but permit me to recommend, that you spare the President-General. It may be that you write for a name. Erostratus, for perpetuating his name, or rather his infamy, burnt the celebrated temple of Diana at Ephesus—and Brutus has attempted to sully the virtues of a Washington! SENEX.
