The Nominations.
At the head of our columns will be found the names of the candidates nominated at the Floyd Convention for District and County officers. With several of these gentlemen we have the pleasure of a personal acquaintance; with some of them the public have been acquainted for a long time, as they have served their country in various important places of trust and profit. Warner Lewis the nominee for the Senate has held various offices in this county and so far as we have heard, he has discharged the duties devolving upon him with fidelity. He was the Register of the land office in this place during Mr. Polk's administration, and gave way for Mr. McKnight on the accession of the Taylor administration. Mr. Mobley the recent School Fund Commissioner, having resigned on his appointment to the Receivership, Mr. Lewis was appointed to that office, which he has held by that appointment and a recent election up to the present time. If a long continued service in office be a guarantee for public confidence, Mr. Lewis can give unexceptionable recommendations. With H. V. Gildea, one of the nominees for Representative, we have the pleasure of a long acquaintance, and we can truly say of him that he is a man, high-minded and honorable-consistent and unwavering as a Democrat; independent and above all those tricks of party and factions which are so unfortunately prevalent in the party organizations of our day. It is due to Mr. Gildea to say that he received the unanimous vote of the Convention by which he was nominated. Mr. Crawford has served the district before in the Senate and it is certainly condescending on his part to consent to be a candidate for the House. His experience will be of some service and should be taken into account. Mr. Eaton was presented by the Convention of Delaware County, it being generally conceded that Delaware should have a Representative. He was nominated unanimously by the District Convention. Mr. David S. Wilson, the candidate for prosecuting Attorney, is long and favorably known in this community. By persevering personal efforts he has won his way into the profession of the law, and now stands before his fellow citizens as a candidate for the important trust of public prosecutor. We hope he may not only be elected but give that satisfaction in office which he has always given as a private citizen and good Democrat. Mr. I. P. Vanhagan has been re-nominated clerk of the District Court. He is also Recorder, Collector and Treasurer of Dubuque County. In nominating and electing him to so many offices we cannot but acknowledge that a wholesome political rule has been flagrantly violated. There is another rule, however, which says that the majority must govern, and to it we bow in submission. The nominee for County Surveyor, Thomas Hurley is a modest, unobtrusive good citizen, and competent Surveyor. His election will give universal satisfaction.
