Maine Medical Association.
Thirty-Second Annual Session at Portland.
Portland, June 10.
The 32d annual meeting of the Maine Medical Association opened in Portland, at 10:30 Tuesday morning, President O. A. Horr of Lewiston in the chair. Prayer was offered by Mr. Barrows of the Park street Unitarian church. The report of the treasurer shows the financial standing of the association to be unusually prosperous.
Dr. Laughton of Bangor presented the report of the visitors appointed to the Medical School of Maine. A detailed review of the work done in each department was given. The school, as usual, was highly commended. Additional chairs of Pathology and Ophthalmology, increased clinical facilities and an extension of the term of study were recommended. Favorable comment was made upon the new departure of having formal graduating exercises. The report was accepted.
Dr. S. P. Warren of Portland presented an interesting paper based upon an experience with two unusual cases of labor.
Dr. Wedgewood of Lewiston reported a case of Oedema of the lungs with death in 12 hours similar to that mentioned by Dr. Warren, characterized by some peculiar symptoms.
Similar cases of this rare complication were also reported by Drs. Meserve, Hill of Saco and J. A. Foster.
The board of censors made a partial report recommending for membership Drs. M. Y. Adams of Brunswick, C. A. Baker of Portland, J. Craig of Unity, F. L. Dixon and C. D. Hill of Bethel, H. H. Hill of Augusta, Alfred Hitchcock of Portland, A. F. Murch Cumberland Mills, Edwin Preble of Portland, A. D. Sawyer of Lisbon Falls, F. W. Smith of West Baxton, C. H. Tobie of Mechanic Falls, H. F. Twitchell of Portland, G. W. Way of Portland. They were severally elected.
The committee on the banquet reported through Dr. Bates of Yarmouth, that it had been deemed advisable to take no action this year and ask to be discharged. The report was accepted. The committee was discharged.
The auditing committee reported that they have examined the accounts of the treasurer and found them properly vouched for. At 12:50 adjourned to 3 P. M.
The afternoon proceedings were resumed at 3 o'clock. An unusually large number were in attendance from remote sections of the State. Drs. F. A. Howe of Newburyport and J. F. Nichols of Cambridge, delegates from Massachusetts, were introduced and invited to participate in the discussion of the meeting. Dr. Howe pleasantly responded, extending the greeting of the Massachusetts Medical Society now in session in Boston, presented the retrospect of the origin and work accomplished by the association, and its struggles in accomplishing a legislation of its own and the public good. The removal of the medical school of Maine to Portland was urged until the efforts of the association was requested and a committee of conference to meet similar committees from the faculty and alumni of the association and recommended to report at the next meeting in 1885. The need of further labor to secure a State board of health was declared to be still necessary, and words of regret were expressed at Maine's backward position with reference to a matter of vital public interest.
Addresses were read with marked favor and applause. A committee consisting of Drs. Hill of Saco, S. W. Johnson of Belfast and Burbank of Yarmouth, was appointed to consider the recommendations of the president and directed to report at an early hour.
Dr. F. H. Gerrish of Portland read two papers, one bearing on a valuable method of recording cases, and the second was entitled "Some Notes on Etherization."
The board of censors recommended for membership D. F. C. Dolley of Falmouth, Geo. Z. Higgins of Strong, G. A. Libby of Brooks and C. E. Williams of Auburn.
Dr. H. E. Hill of Saco read a valuable paper reporting the particulars of and cases of ovariotomy.
In the discussion Dr. Weekes presented interesting facts bearing on modern methods in ovariotomy.
The reports of delegates to other medical societies were referred.
The delegates from Massachusetts were presented and fraternally greeted.
At the afternoon session Dr. Horr presided and delivered the annual address. Papers were read and discussed.
