BENNINGTON, April 19.

Advices from Sunderland state that Mrs. Lewis of that town who wandered from her family on Tuesday morning, the 9th inst. as mentioned in our last, was found in the woods the Thursday noon following, within less than a mile of home. She had wandered the first day and night about in the woods near home as she supposes; the second day she ascended the mountain under the strange idea that she was travelling down stream, even though she kept in sight of the roaring branch great part of the way. Thursday morning she was calm in her mind, observing the rising of the sun, and knowing that it must be in the east, although it seemed to contradict her senses, she set out in the opposite direction, shaping her course towards some cleared land she perceived from the top of the mountain, but not conceiving she was travelling homeward--she kept a right direction, and would soon have reached home, but her strength failed her, her feet became too sore to bear her weight, which obliged her to have recourse to crawling on her hands and knees; but this painful mode soon exhausting her small remnant of strength she sat down, weary and hopeless, leaning for rest on a log, in which situation she was soon after found, by her anxious neighbours, and tenderly conveyed to her joyful family. She is likely to recover from her fatigue. She says she eat nothing while absent, except a few beach nuts, and drank the milk from her breast, by milking it into her hand: from this she found great support and refreshment.

Event Details

Mrs. Lewis wandered from her family into the woods near home, spent the first day and night wandering nearby, ascended a mountain the second day under the mistaken idea of traveling downstream while keeping the roaring branch in sight, and on Thursday morning, calmly observed the sunrise to determine direction, headed toward cleared land but her strength failed, feet became sore forcing her to crawl, then sat weary on a log where she was found
