CLINTON, NEW YORK--Members of the National Civil War Centennial Commission met to discuss an alleged case of racial discrimination at an observance scheduled at Charleston, South Carolina, April 11.
White House spokesmen announced that President Kennedy had asked the commission to assure Negro and white delegates equal treatment in the celebration.
Mrs. Madeline A. Williams, a Negro member of the New Jersey commission unit, had complained that she was refused hotel accommodations at the headquarters of the observance in Charleston.
Officials of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People protested the national observance would be a channel for pro-South propaganda during the Civil War centennial.
